Losing Control of Emotions


With so many things going around us it's hard for both adults and kids to control their emotions all the time.  But why is that? 

Sometimes when a lot of little things go wrong, it can lead to a big emotional blow up and be like a boiling pot overflowing. It can be hard to handle everything happening on a day-to-day basis. It can be especially stressful for children and youth as they are still learning how to handle their emotions in an effective manner 

The lower part of our brain (downstairs brain) is the part that controls our emotions. This part of your brain causes the reactions you have to certain events and we often react without even thinking about it first. The top part of your brain (upstairs brain) is the area of your brain that helps you think logically, problem solve and control feelings about others. The upstairs and downstairs part of your brain are meant to work together, but sometimes emotions can take over. When your emotions take over, your brain might think it is in a dangerous situation, which causes you to be unable to control your emotions. 

The important thing to remember is that it is okay to lose control of your emotions, it's a normal part of our lives, it's what we do to manage our emotions that makes all the difference. 

When you feel yourself starting to feel your emotions build up, here are some techniques to follow to help keep you level headed: 

  • Take slow deep breaths
  • Count to 10 before you react
  • Take a walk to calm down 
  • Talk to an family member, friend or other trusted person about what you are feeling 


By learning what triggers our emotions can help us control them in future situations. When you start feeling angry, anxious, upset or frustrated just remember it's okay. We all have emotions; it’s the way we handle the situations that matters.
